Welcome to the National Autism Association Northern Virginia Chapter. 

The Northern Virginia –Fairfax Chapter. Headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia the Chapter serves Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington Counties.

 

The National Autism Association advocates for the cure, prevention and treatment of Autism and the need for a local chapter has never been greater.

 

The Northern Virginia Chapter’s value to the community is that it fills prevention and treatment service gaps.  

The Northern Virginia chapter seeks to augment and compliment the work of the public schools and other Autism support and advocacy organizations, such as The Loudoun Project, Parents of Autistic Children (POAC), and the Autism Society of America(ASA). 

  • Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
  • Autism costs the nation over 90 billion dollars per year, this figure is projected to double in then ext decade 
  • Virginia has the 15th highest incidence of Autism in the US. Maryland is ranked 11th.
  • 1,786 Fairfax County Public School Children have Autism Diagnoses
  • 1 out of every 112 children in the Fairfax County School System has an Autism Diagnosis
  • The estimated cost to educate special needs child with Autism in the Fairfax County Public School System is $25,000 - $40,000+ per child as compared to less than $13,000 for other children
  • Last year the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that there were more diagnoses for Autism than all other cancers combined (US)
  • Fairfax County accounts for half of all the Autism diagnoses for school aged children when compared to the numbers for the surrounding counties combined
  • In 2003, 3,951 children in Virginia were diagnosed with Autism, in 2007 the combined number of Autism cases in the counties of Fairfax, prince William, Arlington,and Loudoun numbered over 3,500
  • There has been 519% cumulative growth rate of autism from 1992 to 2003 in the State, while the cumulative growth rate for all disabilities reached 39% 

The Chapter is actively seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of administrative, fundraising, and coalition building activities.
